It’s always sad to leave characters behind and move onto new ones, and with six main protagonists in Six it was even harder than usual. Love Notes from Vinegar House is the working title of my next book and when people ask me what it’s like I say it’s more Chasing Boys than Six or Hostage, if that’s any help. (more…)

After months of starting and restarting and editing and restarting yet again my latest book which shall not be named (here) I have noticed something quite curious. Each night I come to my blog page and I have nothing to say…
I have some great ideas during the day. Well, when I say great, I mean not bad. But when I finally get the Dashboard in front of me, fingers twitching, there’s nothing there. Nada. Zippo. It’s like once my brain has had its serve of creative writing for the day it switches onto sleep mode until the next day.
Please tell me I’m not the only one…

been to Mt Ive
and a lot of other cool places in South Australia.
The Aussie outback horizon stretches into tomorrow and has the effect of making me feel both incredibly small and present all at the same time.
Good friends, camp fires, fun.
Bliss.

Alexander Segulin was already my friend before I was born.
His mum and my mum were friends, next door neighbours, and when I arrived I had an instant friend. We hung out for nearly 12 years, in the way that good friends do. We played Spies with our own secret SOS codes, stole food before dinner from our mothers’ kitchens, and dreamed elaborate dreams about the future and what it would bring.

You feel slighted
you feel hurt
someone has
said something
that makes you feel less
than you thought
you were
You rack your brains
you dream of revenge
you wonder
what you did
how you can
make
amends
Someone turns away from you
a smile is not returned
a frown meets your gaze
a phone remains silent
your email blank
A hint, my dear
to help you through
your self-obsessed
life
Others dramas are played out
while you grumble
at imagined slights
and pout
when things don’t go your way
If you put yourself
in other’s shoes
and walk the path
they do
you might just find…
It’s
not
all
about
you.

The black dog books gang hung out at the Ballarat Writers Fest last weekend in full force. A great program with publishers, editors, authors and illustrators and some interesting topics explored. A must-visit for all those interested in Kid Lit – put it on your calendar for next year!

Plans are afoot to put Ned Kelly’s bones up for public display. Is it just me, or is this a bizarre concept? When the bones of 13 Australian Aborigines – held for more than 100 years at a British museum – were repatriated in 2007 it ended a two-decade fight for their return. The idea to display Kelly’s bones is a backward step pre 2007.
A macabre idea in this civilised year of 2011.

This is the name of the panel that I’ll be taking part in at the Ballarat Writer’s Fest this weekend with Chrissie Keighery, Steph Bowe and Gabrielle Williams. We’ll be discussing gatekeepers, after parties and being inappropriate. Should be fun!
