The definition of happiness

June 14, 2014

Categories: Uncategorized

Stories and dreams are what make my world turn.

Sitting here today in a beautiful old house in Maldon – at a table with four other laptops clacking away, the winter sun filtering through naked branches – I was ruminating on the definition of happiness.

Happiness as a 4 year old
listening to my father read me a story.

Happiness as a 10 year old
thinking fame would bring me happiness, imagining an abundance of wealth.

Happiness as a 14 year old
sleepovers at my best friend’s house, telling stories through the night.

Happiness in my 20s
romance and marriage and dreaming of the future

Happiness in my 30s
motherhood and the hopes and dreams for our children

Happiness in my 40s
a career that celebrates writing

Happiness now
listening to a friend read me a story.

Joy.

Okay world

I was so rusty with my blogging skills that it took me a while to crank things up. When I got to my stats page I realised that the world keeps turning – while I’ve been ignoring my poor blog, people have still been dropping by, like visitors visiting when you’re not at home. It doesn’t matter if you never find out, but if you do there’s the disappointment of missing out on engaging with someone, the chance of connecting if only for a brief moment. So I do hope someone drops in again. I promise to be home…

I was excited to hear that Six will be hanging out with the Year 9 students at Emmaus College next year.  Six is currently being reprinted for anyone unable to find a copy in store. It is published by black dog books, an imprint of Walker. Six good reasons for Emmaus Students to read Six. (more…)
